Best area to stay in Bali

The best area to stay in Bali depends on what you want from the trip: culture in Ubud, surf in Canggu, restaurants in Seminyak, cliffs in Uluwatu, or calm water for children in Sanur and Nusa Dua. Here are all six, compared on beaches, airport drive time and price.

Ubud

Culture, rice terraces, a calm inland base$$

Ubud sits in the hills of central Bali, among rice terraces, river valleys and craft villages. Central Ubud is walkable: the royal palace, the art market and the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary are a few minutes apart, with cooking classes, dance performances and yoga studios all around. There is no beach, and it is the longest drive from the airport of the six areas. The resorts in the valleys outside town (Kedewatan, Sayan, Payangan) are quieter still, and most run shuttles into the centre.

  • Airport ~1 h 17–1 h 26 · 47 km Central Ubud; Kiwitaxi from $30
  • Swimming No beach Hotel pools only

Private car from the airport to Ubud →

Why stay here

  • The palace, art market and Monkey Forest on foot from central hotels
  • Rice terraces, river valleys and craft villages close by
  • The calmest evenings of the six areas

Worth knowing

  • No beach: a day at the sea means a drive south
  • The longest airport transfer, over an hour by car
  • Central streets are busy with traffic by day
02

Canggu

Surfers, cafés, long stays$$

Canggu is a string of villages on the west coast north of Seminyak, with black-sand surf beaches such as Echo Beach, Batu Bolong and Berawa, and rice fields between the cafés and villas. It suits surfers and longer stays. The sea is open and rough for swimming, and the lanes are crowded with scooters, so families and anyone after quiet nights should book with care.

  • Airport ~44–52 min · 25 km Kiwitaxi from $31
  • Swimming Surf beaches Strong waves, black sand

Private car from the airport to Canggu →

Why stay here

  • Surf breaks for beginners and experienced surfers
  • Cafés, gyms and co-working spaces for long stays
  • Newer, well-reviewed mid-range hotels

Worth knowing

  • Rough water: better for surfing than swimming
  • Heavy scooter traffic and few pavements
03

Seminyak

Restaurants, shopping, first trips$$$

Seminyak, with Petitenget and Kerobokan beside it, is Bali's most polished beach area: wide sand, boutiques, spas and some of the island's best restaurants, about half an hour from the airport. Many hotels sit a short walk or a free shuttle ride from the beach rather than on it. Kuta and Legian, just south, are the island's party strips: skip them if you want quiet.

  • Airport ~23–32 min · 11 km Kiwitaxi from $24
  • Swimming Open-sea beach Waves and currents

Private car from the airport to Seminyak →

Why stay here

  • The widest choice of restaurants and shops in Bali
  • Short airport drive
  • Long sandy beach for sunset walks

Worth knowing

  • Waves and currents: swim only where lifeguards are posted
  • Busy roads and slow traffic in the evening
  • Higher prices than Ubud or Canggu
04

Uluwatu and the Bukit

Couples, clifftop resorts, surf$$$

The Bukit is the limestone peninsula at the southern tip of Bali. Its west coast around Uluwatu has clifftop resorts, sea views and small coves reached by steps, such as Padang Padang, Bingin and Balangan, and well-known surf breaks. It is spread out and quiet, so most trips involve a car or driver, and several of the coves are better for surfers than swimmers.

  • Airport ~30–49 min · 24 km Kiwitaxi from $28
  • Swimming Coves under cliffs Depends on tide and swell

Private car from the airport to Uluwatu →

Why stay here

  • Clifftop resorts with sea views
  • Small sandy coves and world-class surf
  • Quiet nights away from the busy west coast

Worth knowing

  • Spread out: you need a car or driver
  • Many beaches are reached by long flights of steps
  • Surf breaks are for experienced surfers
05

Sanur

Families, calm water, a relaxed pace$$

Sanur is on the east coast, where a reef offshore keeps the water calm and shallow at most tides. A paved beach path runs along the shore past hotels, cafés and small playgrounds, which makes it Bali's easiest base with young children or for older travellers. Boats to Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan leave from Sanur's harbour, and the airport is under half an hour away.

  • Airport ~24–28 min · 16 km Kiwitaxi from $24
  • Swimming Calm, reef-sheltered Shallow at low tide

Private car from the airport to Sanur →

Why stay here

  • Calm, shallow water for children
  • A flat beach path for walking and cycling
  • Boats to Nusa Penida and Lembongan from the harbour

Worth knowing

  • Quiet in the evening
  • At low tide the water can be too shallow to swim
  • Fewer surf beaches than the west coast
06

Nusa Dua

Families, big resorts, calm beaches$$$

Nusa Dua is a gated resort enclave on the east side of the Bukit, built around large hotels with kids’ clubs, wide lawns and a sheltered beach. A promenade links the resorts, and the Bali Collection shopping centre is in the middle. It has the shortest airport drive of the six areas in the hotel listings. The trade-off is that it feels more like a resort compound than Bali: most restaurants and sights outside it need a taxi.

  • Airport ~18–20 min · 19 km Kiwitaxi from $24
  • Swimming Calm, sheltered beach Reef offshore

Private car from the airport to Nusa Dua →

Why stay here

  • Big family resorts with kids’ clubs and pools
  • Calm, sheltered swimming
  • The shortest airport drive of the six areas

Worth knowing

  • Feels like a resort compound, not a Balinese town
  • Restaurants and sights outside need a taxi
  • Among the higher hotel prices in Bali

When Bali hotels cost the most

Bali hotels cost the most in July and August, the busiest weeks of the dry season, and over Christmas and New Year, when rates jump even though it is the wet season. June and September give you the same dry weather with fewer people, which is why the hotel links in this guide are dated for June.

The cheapest months are November, January, February and March, in or around the wet season. See the best time to visit Bali for month-by-month weather, the cheapest time to visit Bali for the low-price months, and Bali's rainy season for what the wet months are really like.

Questions people ask

What is the best area to stay in Bali?

For a first trip, Seminyak for the beach and restaurants, plus a few nights in Ubud for rice terraces and culture. Sanur and Nusa Dua are the best areas for families because the water is calm, Uluwatu suits couples, and Canggu suits surfers and long stays.

Is it better to stay in Ubud or Seminyak?

Ubud for culture, rice terraces and quiet evenings; Seminyak for the beach, shops and restaurants. They are different trips, and the two are far apart by road, so many visitors split their stay between them.

Where should I stay in Bali for the first time?

Seminyak is the easiest first base: about half an hour from the airport, with a long beach and the widest choice of restaurants. Add Ubud for the inland side of the island. Families on a first trip often prefer Sanur, which is calmer and has shallow water.

Should I split my stay in Bali?

Yes, if you have a week or more. A common split is a few nights in Ubud for culture and nature, then the rest by the sea in Seminyak, Uluwatu, Sanur or Nusa Dua. Do the inland part first and end near the coast, since every beach area here is a shorter drive to the airport than Ubud.

Which area of Bali is best for families?

Sanur and Nusa Dua. A reef keeps the water calm on both, Sanur has a flat beach path and a relaxed small-town feel, and Nusa Dua has large resorts with kids’ clubs. Both are less than half an hour from the airport by car.

Where should couples stay in Bali?

Uluwatu for clifftop resorts and sea views, or the valleys around Ubud for private villas among the rice fields and jungle. Both are quieter than Seminyak and Canggu.

How this guide was put together

Airport distances and transfer prices come from Kiwitaxi's own route pages from Ngurah Rai airport to each area (from prices for the smallest car), read on October 20, 2026. Drive times are the range across the picked hotels' Trip.com listings, which give each hotel's time from the airport by car; Kiwitaxi quotes a longer, padded time for Ubud. Hotel details (walking distances, opening and renovation years, guest scores and review counts) come from each hotel's own Trip.com listing, read the same day. Seasonal prices and the cheapest months come from the Bali month-by-month guide. Hotels are chosen on location, guest score and review count; adults-only and party hotels are left out.
