Is the JR Pass worth it?

Fares are about ¥200 lower in the off-peak season and up to ¥400 higher in the busiest weeks (double that on routes running across two Shinkansen lines). From the airports: the Narita Express to Tokyo is ¥3,140 (see Narita Airport to Tokyo) and the HARUKA visitor ticket from Kansai Airport to Kyoto is ¥2,200; both are covered by the pass.

What the JR Pass covers, and what it doesn't

Covered

  • Every JR Shinkansen except Nozomi and Mizuho trains, with free seat reservations
  • JR limited expresses, including the Narita Express and HARUKA airport trains
  • JR local and rapid trains, such as the Yamanote line in Tokyo
  • The Tokyo Monorail to Haneda, the JR ferry to Miyajima and most JR local buses

Not covered

  • Nozomi and Mizuho trains, without the extra ticket
  • Subways and private lines: Tokyo Metro, Toei, Keisei, Odakyu, Kintetsu
  • The private-line part of through trains, such as the Fuji Excursion beyond Otsuki
  • JR highway buses and the Hakata–Busan ferry

That last point matters for a Mt Fuji day trip: the pass covers the JR part of the Fuji Excursion, and you pay the Fujikyu fare on top. From Narita, the Skyliner is a Keisei train, so the pass holder's airport train is the Narita Express.

The Nozomi catch

Nozomi trains are the fastest and most frequent on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen, and the pass does not cover them on its own. Pass holders buy a special ticket for each ride: ¥4,960 from Tokyo to Kyoto or Shin-Osaka, ¥6,500 to Hiroshima and ¥8,140 to Hakata. It is sold at JR ticket machines and offices in Japan, up to a month ahead, and cannot be bought online before you arrive.

Hikari trains run the same line, stop a little more often, and are covered. In the busiest periods of 2026, every Nozomi seat is reserved-only, so a pass holder with a non-reserved Nozomi ticket may have to stand.

The extras add up fast. On the Tokyo to Fukuoka trip in the calculator, the pass saves ¥7,560 on Hikari and Sakura trains; take Nozomi and Mizuho all the way instead, and single tickets come out ¥8,380 cheaper. If you want the fastest trains, price the trip with the Nozomi switch on.

JR East's passes changed on March 14, 2026: the new JR EAST PASS replaced the separate Tohoku and Nagano/Niigata passes, and the Tokyo Wide and Hokuriku Arch passes went up. JR West's Kansai Area Pass stopped selling on September 30, 2026; the Kansai WIDE Area Pass covers the same cities and more.

How to buy and pick up the pass

The official Japan Rail Pass site is the cheapest place to buy, ¥3,000 to ¥7,000 less than an overseas agency, and the only way to reserve seats before you collect the pass. Since April 1, 2026, a pass bought there can be picked up at ticket machines with a passport reader at Tokyo, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Shinagawa and Ueno stations and at Narita and Haneda airports. Agencies, Klook among them, send an exchange order by post, which you swap for the pass at a JR office in Japan.

The pass is only for visitors entering Japan with "Temporary Visitor" status, shown by a stamp or sticker in your passport. The automated arrival gates don't add one, so use a staffed booth. Questions people ask

Is the JR Pass worth it for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka?

Not for a single loop. Tokyo to Kyoto and Shin-Osaka back to Tokyo by Hikari cost ¥13,650 and ¥14,200, ¥27,850 together, well under the ¥50,000 7-day pass. Even with the Narita Express both ways the tickets come to ¥34,130.

How much is the JR Pass in 2026?

Bought on the official Japan Rail Pass site, the ordinary pass is ¥50,000 for 7 days, ¥80,000 for 14 days and ¥100,000 for 21 days. Through an overseas travel agency it is ¥53,000, ¥84,000 and ¥105,000. Children aged 6 to 11 pay about half.

Can you ride the Nozomi with a JR Pass?

Only with an extra ticket for each ride. It costs ¥4,960 from Tokyo to Kyoto or Shin-Osaka and ¥6,500 from Tokyo to Hiroshima, and it is sold at JR ticket machines and offices in Japan, not online before you arrive. Hikari trains on the same line are covered.

Is the 14-day JR Pass worth it?

Only with a lot of long rides: your tickets need to add up to more than ¥80,000. Tokyo to Hakata and back (¥45,100) plus Tokyo to Hiroshima and back (¥37,420) would just do it.

Does the JR Pass cover the Tokyo subway?

No. The pass covers JR lines, so it works on the JR Yamanote line and the Tokyo Monorail, but not on Tokyo Metro or Toei subway trains, or on private lines such as Keisei, Odakyu and Kintetsu.

Who can buy the JR Pass?
