Staying here means walking to the big sights early, before the tour groups arrive. Hotels are smaller and pricier, and it is the furthest area from Kyoto Station.

When Kyoto hotels cost the most

Kyoto is busiest, and its hotels most expensive, in cherry-blossom season (late March and early April) and during the autumn leaves in November, when the city is at its most crowded. Golden Week (April 29 to May 5), the Gion Matsuri through July, Obon in mid-August and the New Year holiday also fill rooms early.

The cheapest months are January, February and June. May, after Golden Week, is the calm in-between: fresh green maples, warm days and far fewer visitors than April or November. Questions people ask

What is the best area to stay in Kyoto?

For a first trip, Higashiyama and Gion: Kiyomizu-dera, Yasaka and the old streets are on foot, so you can see them early. Kyoto Station is the practical choice for the bullet train and day trips, central Kyoto has the most restaurants, and Arashiyama is the quietest.

Is it better to stay near Kyoto Station or Gion?

Kyoto Station for convenience: the Shinkansen, the Haruka airport express and trains to Nara and Osaka leave from there. Gion for atmosphere and walking to the eastern temples, at higher hotel prices. They are about 15 to 20 minutes apart by taxi or bus.

Where should I stay in Kyoto for the first time?

Higashiyama and Gion, if the budget allows; otherwise central Kyoto around Shijo, which is a walk from Gion and two subway stops from Kyoto Station.

How do I get from Kansai Airport to Kyoto?

The JR Haruka limited express runs direct from Kansai Airport to Kyoto Station in about 75 minutes. Airport buses and private transfers go straight to hotels, which saves changing with luggage if you are staying in Gion or Arashiyama.

Is Arashiyama a good place to stay in Kyoto?

For a quiet stay and the bamboo grove early in the morning, yes. For a first trip it is far from the eastern temples (40 minutes or more), so many visitors stay centrally and visit Arashiyama for a day.

Should I stay in Kyoto or Osaka?

Kyoto to walk to temples early and stay among them; Osaka for food, evenings out and lower hotel prices. They are about 30 minutes apart by JR, so it is easy to stay in one and visit the other.
