ADO bus

1 h 15–1 h 50About MXN 270

ADO runs direct buses from Terminals 2, 3 and 4 to central Playa del Carmen, with up to 30 departures a day. A one-way ticket is usually around MXN 270, about US$17 by ADO’s own July 2026 conversion. The bus stops at Avenida Benito Juárez 251, which ADO puts two minutes from Quinta Avenida, so hotels in the center are often a short walk or taxi from there.

Why take it

  • A low fare with no change of vehicle on the way
  • Up to 30 departures a day, roughly every 20 to 40 minutes
  • 25 kg of checked baggage free, plus a carry-on
  • Standard tickets can usually be rescheduled up to 60 minutes before departure

Worth knowing

  • No ADO service from Terminal 1
  • Last listed departure is 22:35 from the first terminal, so a late flight can miss it
  • It stops in town, not at your hotel
  • ADO’s pages name two Playa stations, so check the one printed on your ticket
02

Private transfer (booked ahead)

About 1 hourFrom $73

A private transfer is booked before you fly: the driver meets you at the airport and drives you to your hotel door, at a price fixed when you book. On Kiwitaxi this route starts from $73 for a minivan seating four, and $75 for a Comfort car or a seven-seat minibus. Four ADO tickets come to about MXN 1,080, or about US$68 at ADO’s own conversion, so for a group of four the car costs little more than the bus.

Authorised airport taxi

Door to doorAsk at the desk

Mexico's transport ministry tells travelers to use the authorised airport taxis. Ask for the price to your hotel in Playa del Carmen before you pay. We do not quote a taxi fare here, because we could not find an official fare list, and we only print prices we can confirm. It is a 55 km trip, so expect a much higher figure than for the Hotel Zone.

Why take it

  • No booking needed
  • The officially recommended way to take a car from the airport

Worth knowing

  • Confirm the price to your hotel before paying
  • Book a private transfer instead if you want the price fixed in advance

Tren Maya

About 50 min on the trainAbout MXN 232

The Tren Maya's own site lists both a Cancún Aeropuerto station and a Playa del Carmen station, but gives no fare or timetable for this trip. October 2026 press reports put the Cancún to Playa del Carmen fare at MXN 232 for foreign visitors, which is less than the ADO bus. They do not say which Cancún station that fare starts from. Por Esto reported two morning trains from Cancún when the route resumed on August 15, 2026, at 6:45 and 10:30, each taking about 50 minutes. It also reported a connecting service, Tren Maya Conecta, between the station and the airport. Confirm all of this on the official booking site before you plan an arrival around it.

Why take it

  • Both stations are on the official route list
  • The reported fare of MXN 232 is below the ADO bus

Worth knowing

  • Only two departures from Cancún are reported, both in the morning
  • Reports give no fare or frequency for the Tren Maya Conecta link from the airport
  • The fare and times are from press reports, not the official site
05

Uber

Door to doorShown in the app

Uber's own Cancun Airport page says pickups can be arranged, but Mexico's federal transport ministry said on March 11, 2026 that app services are not authorised to pick up at airports, and that a court order does not stop authorities from issuing fines. Until that changes, the ADO bus, an authorised taxi or a private transfer avoids the problem.

Why take it

  • Upfront price in the app

Worth knowing

  • Not authorised to pick up at the airport, according to the transport ministry
  • The ministry says a court order does not stop authorities from issuing fines
06

Rental car

About 50 minPer day

Avis has counters in all four terminals, open 24 hours, and Budget, National, Enterprise and Hertz also rent at the airport. It is about 55 km by road to central Playa del Carmen. A car makes sense if you plan day trips; if you are staying near Quinta Avenida for the whole trip, the bus or a transfer is simpler.

Why take it

  • Avis counters in every terminal, open 24 hours
  • Freedom for day trips down the coast

Worth knowing

  • Avis returns are on airport property in front of Terminal 2, with a free shuttle

Car times and distances are map-based estimates with no traffic; bus times are ADO's own. Landing late or leaving early

ADO lists its last departure at 22:35 from the first terminal, so allow for immigration, customs and your bags if you land in the evening. After that, the options are a private transfer, which includes 1 hour 30 minutes of waiting after your scheduled arrival, or an authorised airport taxi. Avis counters are open 24 hours in every terminal.

Kiwitaxi asks for at least 16 hours' notice on standard vehicles, so book a late-night car before you fly rather than from the arrivals hall.
