Bávaro and Arena Gorda

First-timers, the widest choice of hotels$$

Bávaro is the core of Punta Cana's resort coast: a long strip of beach lined with big resorts, from Avenida Alemania up to Arena Gorda at its northern end. It has the widest choice of hotels in Punta Cana, so it is the easiest place to find the room, price and resort style you want, and Bávaro town behind the coast has supermarkets, shops and places to eat outside the resorts. The trade-offs are the crowds, a strip that is busier and louder in the evenings, and seaweed: this is the stretch most exposed to sargassum in summer.

When Punta Cana hotels cost the most

Rates are at their winter high from January to March, the dry season, and the Christmas to New Year fortnight is the most expensive stretch of all, when resorts sell out and set minimum stays. Presidents' Day week in February and Semana Santa, the busiest week for Dominican travellers, fill up early. After Easter, winter rates drop noticeably while the weather stays good, and the first two weeks of December give dry-season weather at near low-season prices.

The cheapest months are September, October and May, but September and October are the peak of the hurricane season. The hotel links here are dated for April, after Easter and before the seaweed season. Sargassum by area

Sargassum seaweed washes onto Punta Cana's east-facing beaches, usually from May to September. The stretch from Bávaro to Cap Cana is the most affected, with the Bávaro strip at its heaviest in July, when resorts rake the beaches daily but cannot always keep up. Uvero Alto often gets less than Bávaro. It usually clears by October and is minimal from December to April, with March the clearest month for the water. The amount varies sharply from year to year.
