The worst month to visit Punta Cana is October

October sits inside the hurricane window with 163mm of rain and the year's lowest sunshine (9.9 hours). September carries the higher storm risk; October has the worse light and a wetter second half. November is wetter still (178mm) but with far lower hurricane risk — so the three months form a slope from dangerous to merely wet.

Hurricane Fiona made landfall just south of Punta Cana on September 19, 2022, closing the airport, flooding the resort zone, and cutting power across the east for days. Maria (September 2017) and Georges (September 1998) also struck the east coast. The Dominican Republic's eastern tip takes the first hit from storms tracking west out of the Atlantic.

Why September and October are genuinely difficult

• Hurricane exposure.Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with Punta Cana's serious storms clustered from mid-August through October. Track systems at the NOAA National Hurricane Center and local advisories from ONAMET.
• Heat and humidity. 30°C days with 26°C nights and humidity at its heaviest; afternoon downpours most days.
• Reduced services. Several resorts close for renovation in September and October; excursions to Saona Island cancel more often for rough seas.
• Grey light.October and November have the year's lowest sunshine — the postcard turquoise needs sun to show.

The upside is cost. All-inclusive rates in September and October are typically 30–40% under the winter price for the same room.

The second problem: sargassum season

Punta Cana's beaches face east into the Atlantic, which makes them the first landfall for the floating sargassum seaweed that has hit the Caribbean most summers since 2011:

• Typically arrives in May, peaks in July–August, and clears by October
• Bávaro and the strip south to Cap Cana are the most affected
• Uvero Alto and north-facing beaches often fare better
• Resorts rake daily and some install offshore barriers, but heavy weeks overwhelm both
• Varies sharply year to year — check recent photos on resort social feeds before booking a summer trip

Put the two problems together and the clean months are December through April: dry, sunny, minimal seaweed, and no storm risk.

If you have to travel in hurricane season, here's what to do

• Book insurance the day you book the flight. Named-storm coverage only applies to storms that did not exist when you bought the policy.
• Book a large resort with a hurricane guarantee — several of the big all-inclusive groups offer free rebooking if a named storm affects your dates.
• Choose Cap Cana or Uvero Alto over Bávaroif sargassum is the concern; the resort zone's northern and southern ends usually see less.
• Book the Saona Island trip for the first days of your stay, when the forecast is most reliable, rather than the last.
• From mid-August, treat the five-day forecast as part of the itinerary. Punta Cana airport shut for Fiona with roughly two days' warning.

Better windows: when to visit instead

• Mid-April to early May: Winter rates drop 20–30% after Easter while the weather stays good and the sargassum has not yet arrived. The best-value window.
• First half of December: Dry season is back (86mm), seaweed is gone, and rates stay near low-season levels until the Christmas surge.
• March: The driest month (56mm), the clearest water, and minimal sargassum — at peak prices with spring-break crowds on the Bávaro strip.
