The worst month to visit Jamaica is October

October is the wettest month of the year on the north-coast resort belt — 242mm at Montego Bay, more than double September — and it is still inside the hurricane window. Rain can persist for days rather than the usual afternoon burst, rivers flood, and the south-coast roads through St Elizabeth and Westmoreland close.

Hurricane Melissa made landfall in St Elizabeth on October 28, 2025, as a Category 5 — the strongest storm on record to hit the island, devastating the south-west and knocking out power across much of the country for weeks. Gilbert (September 1988) and Ivan (September 2004) were the previous benchmarks. Three catastrophic strikes, all inside the same eight-week window from early September to the end of October.

Why September and October are genuinely difficult

• Hurricane exposure.Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, but Jamaica's serious storms cluster from mid-August to late October. Track active systems at the NOAA National Hurricane Center and local advisories from the Meteorological Service of Jamaica.
• Rain volume.October's 242mm on the north coast is the annual peak; Port Antonio and the Blue Mountains see far more. Dunn's River Falls and the river-tubing trips close when rivers run high.
• Heat and humidity. 30–31°C days, 24°C nights, and humidity at its worst in September. Afternoon storms are heavy.
• Reduced services. Some smaller hotels and restaurants close for September and October for maintenance; excursion boats cancel more often.

What you get in return is the year's lowest prices — north-coast all-inclusives typically run 30–40% below their winter rates in September and October.

The other "wrong" time: spring break in Negril

March has excellent weather, but US spring break concentrates on Negril's Seven Mile Beach and Montego Bay's hotel strip for most of the month. If a loud, young party scene is not the goal:

• Beach bars and pool decks are packed and noisy until late
• Rates are at winter-peak levels with none of the winter calm
• The best snorkel and boat trips book out days ahead

The fix: base yourself in Port Antonio, Treasure Beach, or Ocho Rios, which barely notice spring break, or shift to mid-April when the crowds clear and rates drop 20–30%.

If you have to travel in hurricane season, here's what to do

• Stay on the north coast. Montego Bay and Ocho Rios have the airport, the hospitals, and the big resorts that stay open and staffed through the season. The south and west coasts took the worst of Melissa.
• Insure the trip before a storm gets a name. Once the National Hurricane Center names a system, most insurers exclude it — buy named-storm cover at booking time, not the week before.
• Book refundable rooms and changeable flights. Several large all-inclusives offer hurricane guarantees in this window — ask before booking.
• Plan indoor and covered options for wet afternoons: the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston, rum-distillery tours, and the Green Grotto Caves.
• Check the forecast every morning from mid-August. Melissa went from a tropical storm to a Category 5 in about 48 hours over the warm water south of the island.

Better windows: when to visit instead

• Mid-April to early May: Winter high season ends around April 15, when rates drop 20–30% while the weather stays dry and sunny. The best-value window.
• First half of December: Dry season is back (52mm), nights are cooler, and rates stay near low-season levels until the Christmas surge.
• February: The most reliable month — dry, the least humid, and Reggae Month fills the calendar. Peak prices.
