The worst month to visit the Bahamas is September

September is the wettest month of the year in Nassau (122mm) and the statistical peak of the Atlantic hurricane season. Days sit at 31°C with 27°C nights that never cool off, and sunshine drops to under 11 hours. The islands sit directly in the main storm track from the Atlantic, so a system that misses Florida can still hit Abaco or Eleuthera.

Hurricane Dorian stalled over Abaco and Grand Bahama on September 1–3, 2019, as a Category 5 — the strongest storm ever to strike the country, with 295 km/h winds and a storm surge that flattened Marsh Harbour. Matthew (October 2016) and Joaquin (October 2015) both caused major damage in the following month. That is three destructive strikes in five years, all inside the same nine-week window.

Why August through October is genuinely difficult

• Hurricane exposure.Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, but the Bahamas' serious storms cluster from mid-August to late October. Track active systems at the NOAA National Hurricane Center.
• Heat and humidity. Sea temperatures peak, the trade wind weakens, and 31°C days with 27°C nights mean no overnight relief. Afternoon thunderstorms are near daily.
• Seasonal closures. A meaningful share of Out Island lodges — Exuma, Eleuthera, Abaco, Long Island — close for September and October for maintenance and staff leave. Restaurant hours shrink even on New Providence.
• Rough water. Distant storms send swell that closes the calm-water sandbars and snorkel spots that are the reason to come.

The trade-off is real: September and October are the cheapest months of the year, with Nassau resort rates 30–40% below winter.

The other "wrong" time: spring break

March has excellent weather, but US college spring break lands on Nassau and Paradise Island for most of the month. If a loud, young resort scene is not what you want:

• Cable Beach and Paradise Island pools are packed and noisy
• Rates are at winter-peak levels with none of the winter calm
• Boat tours and the Exuma day trips book out

The fix is easy: base yourself on an Out Island (Eleuthera, Exuma, Abaco), which barely notice spring break, or shift to April when the crowds clear and rates drop.

If you have to travel in hurricane season, here's what to do

• Stay on New Providence or Paradise Island. They have the airport, the hospitals, and the resorts that stay open and staffed through the season.
• Buy travel insurance with named-storm coverage before a storm is named. Most policies stop covering a storm once it has a name.
• Book refundable rooms and changeable flights. Several major resorts offer hurricane guarantees in this window — ask.
• Confirm your Out Island lodge is actually open before booking flights to Exuma or Eleuthera in September–October.
• Watch the five-day forecast daily from mid-August; storms here develop fast.

Better windows: when to visit instead

• Late April – early May: The sweet spot. Dry (45–69mm), 27–29°C, the clearest water of the year, spring-break crowds gone, and rates 20–30% below February. The Family Island Regatta in Exuma closes April.
• First three weeks of November: Hurricane risk fades to near zero by mid-month, rainfall halves, humidity drops, and demand stays low until Thanksgiving.
• December – February: The most reliable weather of the year, at peak prices. Book early for the Christmas fortnight.
