Best time to visit the Bahamas

The Bahamas runs on two seasons, and the line is sharp

There is a dry, reliable season from December to May and a wet, storm-exposed season from June to November. Unlike a lot of Caribbean destinations, the difference here is not subtle: September records nearly four times the rainfall of January, and the archipelago sits directly in the main Atlantic hurricane track.

So the whole calendar comes down to one decision — go in the dry half, and then optimise for crowds and price within it.

The best month is April

April wins on almost every measure. Days reach 27°C, rainfall is a modest 45mm, sunshine hits 11.6 hours a day, and the water is at its clearest of the year — which matters enormously in a country whose entire appeal is being able to see the bottom.

It is also when the crowds break. US college spring break dominates March and the first days of April; once Easter passes, Nassau and Paradise Island quieten and rates ease from their winter peak while conditions stay peak-season. The National Family Island Regattain George Town, Exuma, closes the month — the country's premier sailing event and a genuinely local spectacle.

February and March: the most bankable weather

If you want the highest possible odds of a flawless week and price is secondary, February is the answer: 26°C, the lowest humidity of the year, 38mm of rain and 10 hours of sun. Cold fronts can push down from Florida and bring a breezy day or two, but the pattern is as dependable as the Bahamas gets.

The trade-off is cost and company — this is peak season, resorts run full, and rates are at their winter high. March shares the weather but adds spring break, which concentrates on Nassau and Paradise Island for most of the month. If a loud resort scene is not what you want, the Out Islands barely notice it.

The quiet value windows: May and November

• Early May — warm (29°C), mostly dry, water at 27°C, and rates dropped after the spring rush. Humidity builds through the second half of the month, so go early.
• The first three weeks of November — the season turning point. Hurricane risk falls to near zero by mid-month, rainfall halves to 59mm, humidity drops, and demand stays low until Thanksgiving. Arguably the best value week of the year.
• Early December — dry and pleasant at 26°C, before rates climb toward the Christmas peak. Junkanoo, the national street parade of costumes, drums and brass, runs through the night of December 26 and again on New Year's Day in Nassau; it is the biggest cultural event of the year and worth planning a trip around.

Choose the island, not just the month

“The Bahamas” is 700 islands, and they deliver very different holidays:

• Nassau / Paradise Island — the resorts, casinos, restaurants and the easiest airport transfers. Busiest and loudest, especially in March.
• Exuma — the postcard water: sandbars, swimming pigs, and the cays. Small lodges and villas, several of which close September–October.
• Eleuthera and Harbour Island — pink-sand beaches and a quieter, more upscale feel. Reached by ferry or small plane from Nassau.
• Abaco — sailing and out-island calm, still rebuilding in places after Hurricane Dorian in 2019.

If you have five days, Nassau plus a day trip to the Exuma cays covers a lot. If you have eight, base yourself on an Out Island for the second half.

What to avoid

August through October is the window to skip — the Atlantic hurricane peak, when rainfall doubles, humidity is at its worst, and a meaningful share of Out Island lodges close for the season. A few practical things

• US dollars are accepted everywhere — the Bahamian dollar is pegged 1:1, so there is no need to change money.
• Nassau has US pre-clearance, so US-bound flights arrive home as domestic. Allow extra time at departure.
• Book the Exuma day trip early in your stay — it is weather-dependent and you want a second chance at it.
• Use licensed taxis and water-sports operators. Resort areas and the Out Islands are low-risk; Nassau warrants standard urban precautions away from the tourist strips.

The honest verdict

Go in April — the clearest water, 27°C, and the crowds gone after Easter. Take February if you want the most reliable weather money can buy and do not mind paying peak rates for it. Take early November or early May if value is the priority; both give you dry-season conditions at a fraction of the winter price.
