The worst month to visit Osaka is August

August is Osaka's hottest month: 33°C daytime highs are the average, 35°C+ is frequent, nights sit at 25°C, and humidity runs above 75%. The city's appeal is walking — Dotonbori, Shinsekai, Kuromon Market, the castle park — and in August every one of those is a sweat-through-your-shirt exercise by mid-morning.

Obon (August 13–15) adds the domestic-travel crush: shinkansen seats to and from Shin-Osaka sell out weeks ahead, some small restaurants close for the week, and Universal Studios Japan hits its longest queues of the year. The window to avoid is roughly August 11–17.

Why July through September is genuinely difficult

• July — heat arrives, Tenjin Matsuri redeems it.The rainy season ends mid-month and 31°C humidity takes over. Tenjin Matsuri (July 24–25) — one of Japan's three great festivals, with a river procession of 100 illuminated boats and a fireworks finale — is the one reason to be here. Book early.
• August — peak heat plus Obon. As above.
• September — typhoon season. 170mm of rain and periodic typhoons crossing Kansai; Typhoon Jebi (September 2018) flooded Kansai International Airport and closed it for days. Track systems at the Japan Meteorological Agency.
• June — the rainy season.200mm, mostly overnight and morning drizzle. Hotel rates hit their annual low, and Osaka's indoor strengths — the aquarium, USJ, the food halls — make it the least painful of the bad months.

The other "wrong" time: cherry blossom and Golden Week

Osaka books out alongside Tokyo and Kyoto for cherry blossom week (roughly April 1–8 at Osaka Castle Park), and Golden Week (April 29 – May 5) follows immediately:

• Rates rise sharply — though they still run 20–25% below Kyoto for similar access
• Osaka Castle Park's 3,000 cherry trees draw the densest crowds of the year
• Golden Week fills USJ, the aquarium, and every train to Kyoto and Nara

Osaka is actually the smart base for a Kansai cherry-blossom trip — cheaper and better connected than Kyoto — but only with a booking made the previous autumn.

If you have to travel in summer, here's what to do

• Eat your way through the afternoons.Kuromon Market, the department store depachika in Umeda and Namba, and the covered Tenjinbashisuji arcade — 2.6km of shade — are Osaka's answer to 35°C.
• Do the castle at 9am and Dotonbori after 7pm, when the neon works and the heat has eased.
• Avoid August 11–17 unless Tenjin Matsuri or a specific event anchors the trip.
• Buy travel insurance with weather coverage for September — Kansai International is the airport most exposed to typhoon closures in Japan.
• Use USJ's summer night hours — the park stays open late in summer, and evening is the only civilised time to queue.

Better windows: when to visit instead

• October:Osaka's underrated peak — 22°C days, low humidity, the autumn harvest at Kuromon Market, and USJ's Halloween season. Less booked than November.
• November:The clearest weather of the year (17°C, 70mm) and the Minoo Park koyo half an hour from the centre — a fraction of Kyoto's autumn crowds.
• Mid-May:After Golden Week, 23°C and dry, with Umeda's beer gardens open and the Dotonbori patios at their best.
