Best time to visit Key West

Key West has a long, generous season — and a short bad one

The southernmost point of the continental US never really gets cold: even January averages 23°C. The year splits cleanly into a dry, comfortable season from November through May and a hot, wet, storm-exposed one from June through October.

Seven good months is generous by Caribbean standards. Within them, the decision is about crowds, price, and which of the island's very distinctive events you want to be there for — or avoid.

The best month is April

April is the peak of the Key West year: 26°C days, 12.3 hours of sun, only 36mm of rain, and the spring-break crowd gone by mid-month. Winter rates ease after Easter while the weather is at its best — dry, warm, and not yet humid.

The Conch Republic Independence Celebrationin late April is ten days of parades and mock sea battles, celebrating the island's tongue-in-cheek 1982 secession. It is lively without being overwhelming — a good week to be here rather than one to dodge.

The rest of the dry season

• January — the coolest and driest month (23°C, 33mm). Peak season for snowbirds; Duval Street is busy and rates are at their winter high. Art Deco-era guesthouses book out.
• February — dry (32mm) with 10 hours of sun and comfortable days. The water is at its coolest, around 23°C, but fine for snorkelling on a calm day.
• March — 25°C and 11 hours of sun, excellent weather with a younger, louder crowd through most of the month for spring break.
• May — the sunniest month of the year at 12.6 hours, still fairly dry (57mm), with low-season rates starting. Humidity builds through the month and nights stay at 26°C. Tarpon fishing peaks — a major draw for anglers.
• Early November — the reset: rain drops to 62mm, the water is still warm, and demand is low in the gap between Fantasy Fest and Thanksgiving. The best-value window of the year.
• Early December — pleasant at 24°C and quiet, before rates climb to the Christmas–New Year peak.

Fantasy Fest: know the dates before you book

The last ten days of October bring Fantasy Fest — an adult-oriented costume festival that takes over Duval Street and fills every room in town at rates above the winter peak. Body paint is the dress code and the atmosphere is emphatically not family-friendly.

If that is the trip, book by spring. If it is not, avoid the last week of October entirely — and note that early November, just days later, is one of the calmest and best-value weeks on the calendar.

What to actually do, and when

• Dry Tortugas National Park — a full day by ferry or seaplane to Fort Jefferson, 110km west. The best snorkelling in the Keys. Calmest seas December through May; book weeks ahead.
• Reef snorkelling and diving — the only living coral barrier reef in the continental US. Clearest water in the dry season; mornings are calmer than afternoons.
• Mallory Square sunset — the nightly ritual, year-round.
• Tarpon fishing — peaks in May.
• Hemingway Days — mid-July, with the look-alike contest and a marlin tournament. Hot, but the one good reason to be here in summer.

What to avoid

August and September— the Atlantic hurricane peak plus the year's wettest, stickiest weather (189mm in September). The Keys are the most storm-exposed place in the continental US and have a single evacuation road, so visitor evacuation orders come early. A few practical things

• Three days is enough for the island itself — Old Town, the reef, a sunset, and the Hemingway Home. Add a day for Dry Tortugas.
• The drive from Miami is part of the trip. Four hours down the Overseas Highway, with stops at Bahia Honda State Park and the Seven Mile Bridge. Flying into Key West (EYW) saves time but skips the best road in Florida.
• Old Town is walkable and parking is painful. Stay in Old Town and go on foot or by bike; New Town has cheaper rooms and easier parking, 15 minutes away.
• The Middle Keys make a cheaper base. Marathon is an hour up the highway, calmer and better for families, with Bahia Honda — the best swimming beach in the Keys — nearby.

The honest verdict

Go in April: the best weather of the year, 12 hours of sun, and the crowds thinning after Easter. Take early November if value matters — dry-season conditions, warm water, and the quietest fortnight on the calendar. Take January to March for the most bankable winter escape, at peak prices. And check the Fantasy Fest dates before booking anything in late October.
